It lives in flat ponds and rivers with slow flow, especially in places with lush aquatic plants. It is highly tolerant to salt and high temperatures and is found even in salt fields and hot springs. They like to swim in groups on the surface of the water and feed on small animals and plants. The spawning period is from April to October, and eggs can be laid frequently when the water temperature is 18 to 30°C; the eggs have filamentous protrusions that are used to wrap around aquatic plants for hatching.
